Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Sports Association, the group that organizes the softball season, is looking for more players, teams and umpires.
Myriah Shakespeare is JSA president. "We definitely need more players. We're trying to outreach into the community to peak more interest and let them know we're here and that we encourage a lot of people to come play."
The scarcity of top level women's teams has spurred a proposal to move one of the three teams to a men's division since it has dominated the other two teams in recent years.
Traci Gilmour is the USA Softball of Alaska District Commissioner for Juneau. "The problem I think is most focal in the women's division right now, but its all top divisions in coed, men's and women's." She said they have very few elite players. "To be able to gain those players would bulk up the C divisions and give these guys somebody else to play against." Gilmour said the one team in the top women's division has bee dominant to a point where nobody's having fun.
All the information prospective players or teams or umpires need can be found at www.jsa.org
The deadline for team registration is March 29 with play scheduled to commence May 1.
