
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - After a three-year hiatus, the Juneau Lions club's biggest fundraiser has returned.
Sunday, Mar. 19 marked the start of the 74th Gold Medal Basketball Tournament in Juneau. As usual the tournament is being held at Juneau Douglas High School.
It's the Juneau Lions Club's biggest fundraiser, and will run until Saturday, Mar. 25.
It started off with a C Bracket game, Klukwan against Yakutat. Klukwan won 80 to 76.
Then a B Bracket game, Kake vs Juneau. Juneau won 86 to 67.
After that was the first Masters game of the tournament, Angoon vs the James Gang of Juneau. Juneau won again, 65 to 47.
Another B bracket game with Metlakatla vs Hoonah followed that and Metlakatla won. 75 to 70.
A break was taken and in the evening was the second master's game, with Hoonah facing off Kake. Hoonah won 80 to 23.
A third B bracket game, Angoon against Hydaburg took place, 76 to 74. Hydaburg won.
Then a C bracket with Angoon facing off Hoonah, Hoonah with 79 and Angoon with 54.
The last game for Sunday was a B bracket, Haines Merchants vs Yakutat, Haines with 85 and Yakutat with 64.
There was a lot of close calls to start out with.
While games officially started Sunday, opening ceremonies began Monday.
